Clinical Trials Special Interest Group

Goal

To promote excellence in the design, conduct, analysis, and dissemination of clinical trials through collaboration, education, innovation, and advocacy in Africa.

Aims

To increase the number of clinical trials conducted in Africa in the next 5 years by fostering collaboration, promoting best practices and standards, and educational and capacity building offers, including use of innovative trial design, digital tools and public and patient involvement.

Advocate for policies that support building clinical trial capacities and financing cancer research.

Disseminate African knowledge and research findings to AORTIC members and the wider cancer community through the membership portal, symposia for members and at AORTIC conferences and international meetings.

Key Objectives

Foster Collaboration: Leverage the AORTIC membership portal to facilitate mentorship and networking among researchers, clinicians, statisticians, regulatory experts, and other stakeholders involved in clinical trials and encourage multi-center and interdisciplinary trials.
Promote Best Practices and Standards: provide guidance and training on the use of standardized methodologies, including trial protocols, data collection, and analysis and encourage compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and regulatory requirements through regular refresher training.
Capacity Building and Education: develop a training plan that responds to current needs for professionals at all career stages and raises awareness of emerging methodologies and technologies in clinical research including innovative trial design, integration of digital tools and enhanced Patient and Public Involvement (PPI).
Advocate for Policy and Funding Support: In collaboration with the Research Committee and other special interest groups, develop and promote a position statement on Cancer Research in Africa, with a dedicated section on clinical trials requirements, including the need for sustainable funding models for academic and public-interest trials.
Dissemination of Knowledge and Research Findings: promote submission of African clinical trials results to the AORTIC journal at for presentation at AORTIC conferences and symposia, and via the membership portal, encouraging open science and data sharing.

Resources & Outputs

In collaboration with BVGH, several online trainings have been conducted which are available for self-learning on BVGH.

The Vice-President structure of the AORTIC Council is intentional, with a representative in each African sub-region – Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western and Central – you have a direct route to share your feedback and ideas with us.

In addition, the website has a new feature, enabling translation of all materials from English to French, Portuguese, and Arabic to improve dissemination of knowledge of malignant diseases and their management in African countries and encourage you to get involved in AORTIC:
