AORTIC – SSO

Building Cancer Knowledge Among Primary Healthcare Providers

Overview of the Partnership

The relationship with the Society of Surgical Oncology is led by the AORTIC special interest group on surgical oncology. The agreement focuses on building oncology surgery capacity in Africa with 3 elements focused on career development and two new areas to be available in 2026:

  • Leadership representation at the annual SSO International Conference on Surgical Cancer and the AORTIC biennial conference.

  • Annual selection of an AORTIC member to benefit from the SSO International Career Development Exchange Program. The awardee receives a grant to support travel to the SSO International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care and to one US-based surgical oncology institution for a one week fellowship following the conference.

  • Global Partner Posters Top abstracts from the AORTIC Conference will be invited to present a “global partner poster” at the SSO International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care. This will include publication of the abstracts in the supplemental issue of the Annals of Surgical Oncology.

In 2026, the AORTIC SIG will be developing:

Launch the “Best of SSO” educational series

Feature selected top abstracts from the SSO International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care, bringing cutting-edge global insights to the African oncology community.

Establish a joint virtual Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) collaboration

Create a shared learning platform focused on specific disease sites, co-led by SSO and AORTIC faculty, to discuss and present clinical cases that strengthen multidisciplinary cancer care across Africa.
