Medical Oncology Special Interest Group

Goal

Create a dynamic, stimulating professional networking and mentorship forum with continuous professional development, addressing systemic therapy concerns across the African continent.

Aims

Encourage the AORTIC membership to maintain their medical oncology knowledge base and keep up with the latest advancements through a targeted virtual continuing education forum and opportunities to discuss at in-person meetings and the AORTIC conference.

Facilitate mentorship and support for medical oncology trainees and early career medical oncologists in the AORTIC membership.

Develop a pan-African multidisciplinary team / tumour board to review complex and rare cases and support the use of evidence-based individualized treatment plans.

Support the engagement of medical oncologists in cancer research spanning translational, clinical and health services research to promote quality of care, provide evidence for effectiveness of systemic therapy and innovation for cancer patients in Africa.

Key Objectives

Review the library of AORTIC webinars and training series and create bespoke continual medical education offers for AORTIC members for both early career and established medical oncologists.
Leverage the AORTIC membership portal to match medical oncology trainees and early career medical oncologists to mentors that can support continued education, skills development and taking next career steps.
Identify the priority MDT needs and develop a regular community of practice for case discussions to support medical oncologists in providing evidence-based, safe, and cost-effective use of cancer medicines and preserving the quality of life of cancer patients through the entire ‘cancer journey.’
Partner with the research committee to develop a series of webinars that inspire medical oncologists to get involved and conduct cancer research across the spectrum of translation, clinical and services delivery science.
