Psycho-oncology and Behavioural Science Special Interest Group

Goal

Inspire and develop research in Africa that deals with the social, psychological, behavioural and cultural issues that influence cancer prevention, early diagnosis and treatment across the Cancer care continuum.

Aims

Build capabilities and the capacity in psycho-oncology by training professionals to disseminate psycho-oncology services; membership capacity building in Africa in collaboration with registered Psycho-oncology societies in Africa.

Develop research grants to explore social, psychological, behavioural and cultural issues and culturally sensitive psychosocial interventions to enhance the quality of life of cancer patients along the cancer care continuum in Africa.

Promote the integration of psycho-oncology services in all cancer care centers in Africa.

Key Objectives

Engage registered psycho-oncology societies in Africa, seeking partners in all five sub-regions of Africa, towards joint education and training plans and promotion of AORTIC membership.
Explore mapping of current level and scope of psycho-oncology services in African cancer centres for analysis and alignment with objective 1 and development of a best practice guide for cancer centres.
Develop a case for support of research grants and coordinate with the AORTIC Executive Council on fundraising plans.
Develop an annual training programs, including workshops, seminars and conference sessions building of the project ECHO series and mapping to enhance the therapeutic skills of psycho-oncologists in Africa.
