Nursing Oncology Special Interest Group

Goal

The goal of the SIG is to enhance Oncology Nursing as a Specialty in Africa through improving oncology nurse training and education in Africa along with inter-regional/ international collaborative research.

Aims

to increase networking amongst oncology nurses in Africa

to strengthen the voice of nurses within AORTIC and the region

to support and link nurses into education and research opportunities in the region

to collaborate with national, regional and international organisations to strengthen cancer nursing in the region.

Key Objectives

To bring together nurses in cancer care in Africa to discuss issues in relation to oncology nursing as a specialty, the availability of training and education, and the implementation of research across the region.

To share best practices and increase networking in Cancer Nursing through WhatsApp, social media, Symposia, workshops, meetings and conferences as appropriate.

To provide up-to-date nursing advice, counsel and co-ordinate research planning that relates to prevention, early detection, treatment, palliative care and survivorship within oncology.

To identify training hubs within Africa to help facilitate the training of Cancer Nurses.

Finalisation and dissemination of competency framework for cancer nurses

Training and mentorship of cancer nurses in Africa in Leadership and cancer policy delivered through the Pfizer Global Bridges in Oncology Program Grant, in partnership with: AORTIC, ISNCC and University of Ibadan

To undertake a survey of cancer nurses in the region with regards to education and research training needs and available resources.

Networking with other national, regional and international organisations within the region and working with them on policy, advocacy, education and research e.g. national cancer nursing organisations, UICC, APCA, GPON, ICPCN, ISNCC, SIOP, MASCC etc.

Sharing information about education programmes for oncology nurses and supporting programmes such as African Cancer Nursing Leadership Institute and Oncology Nursing leadership programme for Africa being run through UHAS, ISNCC and City Cancer Challenge

Delivering and participating in webinars by disseminate knowledge, foster regional dialogue and highlight best practices and innovations

Delivering workshops and other sessions at the AORTIC conferences and presenting at conferences e.g. GPON, ISNCC, ICN, MASCC etc.
