80% of all cancer patients will require a surgical procedure, yet in Africa, 9/10 have no access to safe, timely surgery. AORTIC will be participating in the SSO 2025 meeting in Tampa, Florida in October.
As part of our ongoing MOU with the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), we are looking for ways to expand surgical capacity in Africa. The SSO supports the International Career Development Exchange Program. This initiative allows surgical oncologists involved in cancer surgery to attend the annual SSO meeting and spend 1-2 weeks at a center of their choice—building connections, gaining experience, and sharing knowledge on best practices. This partnership is crucial because cancer surgery lags behind other treatment modalities, despite covering the full spectrum of care, from diagnosis and prevention to treatment and palliation. It’s a critical piece that needs more focus.
We are proud of this year’s recipient, a practicing surgical oncologist from Angola, Dr. Iryna Jacinto based at Irene Neto Hospital and one of our AORTIC Africa Cancer Leaders (see ACLI). She is committed to making a difference in cancer care in her region. Sending a spotlight her way!
